General Deep Cleaning Frequently Asked Questions

We are here to help!

General Deep Cleaning Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes you need a clean that’s above and beyond the normal day-to-day upkeep. SERVPRO® has the experience needed to provide the best cleaning services, no matter the situation. We’ve answered some common questions below about general cleaning, including carpets, upholstery, ceilings, floors, walls, drapes and blinds.

Carpets

Why is it necessary to get my carpets cleaned?

Carpets act as a filter, trapping dust, dirt, gases, animal hair, and other soils. It’s important to vacuum carpets regularly and to have them fully cleaned on a regular basis, before they’re appearing dirty. Dirt builds up in layers, and when carpet looks dirty, you’re actually only seeing the dirt at the tips of the carpet fibers. If you wait until your carpets look dirty to have them cleaned, they may not be able to be restored to original condition.

How often should carpets be vacuumed?

Vacuuming your carpet is important preventative maintenance that will extend the life of your carpets and keep them looking better, longer. Regular vacuuming can also extend the amount of time between professional carpet cleanings.

Vacuuming frequency depends on the level of foot traffic and other conditions that might be present in your home that soil the carpet. Low traffic areas should be vacuumed at least once a week, and high traffic areas need daily vacuuming. High traffic areas in your home, like main entryways, benefit from consistent vacuuming.

Can I stay in the home while my carpets are being cleaned?

Yes, depending on the circumstance, you should be able to remain at home while your carpets are being cleaned. We’ll ask for an appropriate staging area in your home for our equipment, which should be near a water source. It’s important that children and pets are kept away from this staging area, but you may remain in the home while we work to clean your carpets.

How long will it take for my carpets to be cleaned?

The time it takes to clean carpets greatly depends on the size of the area being cleaned, and the type of cleaning we are performing. SERVPRO uses five different carpet cleaning methods, which will be chosen depending on the type of carpet fiber and degree of soiling.

How much does carpet cleaning cost?

The cost for carpet cleaning will depend on the size of area being cleaned, and the type of cleaning method used. We will move furniture as necessary, pretest your carpet fibers and select the appropriate cleaning method depending on the severity of soiling.

How often should I get my carpets cleaned?

The frequency of carpet cleaning depends on several factors. Carpets in homes without children, pets or smokers should be cleaned every six to 12 months. Carpets in homes with children, pets or where smoking is occurring need cleaned more often; every three to six months. Carpets in office buildings should be cleaned every six to 12 months, but if the office is on a ground floor, that frequency increases to every three to six months.

I have spots on my carpet. Will carpet cleaning remove those?

If an accident occurs, you should try to remove the spot immediately. The longer the substance is left in the carpet the more likely it will become a permanent stain. We will pretreat traffic lanes, heavily soiled areas and any spots present. We’ll work to remove spots before cleaning your carpet and use a method/cleaner selected for the type of soil that created the spot.

Can I walk on wet carpet after it’s been cleaned?

It’s best to stay off the carpet until it’s dry, if possible. We will groom the perimeter of the carpet to allow air to circulate around the fibers. If a shorter drying time is needed, we may set up air movers to blow over the carpet surface, reducing drying time.

Upholstery

Why is it necessary to get my upholstery cleaned?

Textiles such as upholstery and draperies act as a filter, trapping dust, dirt, gases, animal hair and other soils. Regular vacuuming and spot removal are recommended preventative maintenance for these surfaces, which could increase the time between professional cleanings.

I have spots on my couch. Can professional upholstery cleaning remove them?

Any spots or heavily soiled areas will be treated prior to cleaning. While not all stains can be removed, we have the knowledge, methods and cleaners necessary to remove spots, if possible. Most cleaning companies have only one or two cleaning methods, whereas SERVPRO has 10 fabric cleaning methods. We will match our services to your cleaning needs.

How long will it take you to clean my upholstery?

The time it takes to clean upholstery varies on its size, the fabric makeup, and the method required to clean it. We’ll work as quickly as possible to get your upholstery clean and back in service.

Do I need to leave the house while my upholstery is cleaned?

No, you do not need to leave the house while upholstery or draperies are cleaned.

How often should I get my upholstery cleaned?

Cleaning frequency depends on several factors in the building where the item is located. The number of people and children, pets, and whether smoking is occurring are factors that influence the frequency of cleaning. Typically, upholstery and draperies should be cleaned every 12 to 24 months, but specific factors may require more frequent cleaning.

When can I sit on my upholstery after it’s cleaned?

You should wait until upholstery is fully dry before sitting on it, as the fabric is more sensitive to residues when it is wet or damp.

Are you supposed to clean your walls regularly?

Yes, it’s important to clean your walls at least once a year. If you have an alternate heating source that exudes different residues, wall cleaning should occur more often. Additionally, if you plan to repaint a room, cleaning the walls is an important first step to help make sure the paint adheres properly.

You can extend the time between cleaning through regular maintenance that includes dusting and cobweb clearing. Washing your kitchen and bathroom walls more often is a good idea, since these areas of the home are used most often.

Walls

What’s on your walls?

Dust that accumulates around your house also sticks onto your walls. This layer of dust builds up over time, especially if you don’t regularly dust the wall surfaces. Additionally, steam from cooking in the kitchen, and from showers in the bathroom, allows dust and particles to stick to walls in these areas, more easily.

Can you clean my painted walls without damaging the paint?

We will pretest any area before conducting a full wash of walls to make sure cleaners don’t react negatively with the paint. We have multiple processes and cleaners to choose from depending on how extensive the soiling on your walls is. We’ll test and monitor as we go to make sure your walls are returned to their original condition.

Can you remove stains from my walls?

Depending on the severity of the stain, we have processes and cleaners specifically for cleaning walls. We’ll work to help return your walls to their original condition, without stains.

Hardwood Floors

Is professional hardwood cleaning costly?

The cost for professional hardwood cleaning varies greatly depending on the size of your home and area covered by hardwood flooring that needs cleaned. Contact a SERVPRO near you for an estimate on professional hardwood cleaning.

Can I use household cleaning products on my hardwood floors?

You shouldn’t use just any household cleaning product on hardwood floors, as it may damage the surface or penetrate the wood leaving undesired consequences. There are cleaning products made specifically for hardwood floor application, and these should be selected. Alternately, you can make a mild cleaner for hardwood floors by mixing one part vinegar with 10 parts warm water.

How long does it take for you to professionally clean my floors?

The length of time to clean your floors depends greatly on the size of your home and the area covered by hardwood flooring that needs addressed. Contact a SERVPRO near you for an estimate on the time it will take for hardwood cleaning in your home.

How long do I need to wait before walking on my floors after you’ve cleaned them?

You’ll want to wait for the floors to dry before walking on them or moving any furniture back into place. SERVPRO technicians will let you know when it’s safe to walk normally on the floors.

Curtains and Drapes

How often should curtains be cleaned?

Curtains or draperies should be cleaned every three to six months. However, if a member of your household has severe allergies, consider cleanings more often.

Can I clean my draperies myself?

Depending on the type of draperies or curtains you have, you can clean these yourself. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for fabric care before attempting this on your own. You can use your home washing machine, but ensure that it’s large enough for the job. Some fabrics may require dry cleaning, or other specialty cleaning methods.

What types of blinds can SERVPRO clean?

SERVPRO can clean all types of curtains, draperies and blinds. For more information about the specific type of window treatments you own and how we can help with cleaning, contact a SERVPRO near you.

How often do blinds need cleaned?

Blinds should be cleaned once a month, including both dusting and washing with soapy water. Vacuuming in between heavier cleanings will help reduce the amount of time needed to complete the more thorough washes.

Tips for Making a Fire Claim

12/1/2021 (Permalink)

If your home has fire damage and you need restoration service, SERVPRO is here! We are always here to help!

How to File A Fire Claim

A fire in your home in Northern Idaho can leave you with a million things to do running through your mind. The fire restoration process is fairly straightforward, but you want to make sure to do everything in the right order so that you get the most money you can when you file your insurance claim. Here are some tips for how to handle the process well.

1. Make Your Calls

One of the first things you should do is make some calls. Obviously, the company that carries your fire insurance needs to know about the damage to your home. It is also advisable to call fire remediation specialists. You are also not required to use your Fire Department's suggested mitigation Company. It is best to consult with your insurance agent or adjuster on who they recommend.  The sooner they can arrive on the scene, the better, particularly if you need emergency cleanup to prevent secondary damage. They can also help you itemize costs, which may be helpful when filing your claim.

2. Secure Your Home

The insurance adjuster will likely check to make sure you have taken the correct measures to protect your home from further damage. After all, the more damage your house sustains, the more it costs to fix it. If you do not board up windows and doors, or if you leave holes in your roof or skylights open, the insurance company may not cover part of the damages as this looks like neglect of the property.

3. Leave Damage Alone

It may seem counterintuitive to delay the beginning of the fire restoration process until professional help arrives, but that's exactly what you need to do. Any smoke cleaning you do may cause more damage. If it doesn't, it can still hurt your chances of getting a full settlement, because the insurance company is not going to pay for damage the adjuster doesn't see. No damage remediation should begin until the entire area has been photographed and documented.

A large part of filing a claim is knowing how to prove the damage. By following these three tips, you can increase the likelihood of getting a settlement with your insurance company that covers most, if not all, of the fire restoration services you require.

If you have ever had a disaster in your home whether it was flooding and water damage, fire or smoke damage, discovering mold in a hidden corner, or you have a bat infestation in your attic you might wonder who among all the restoration and clean up companies to call. SERVPRO has over 50 years of experience, highly trained certified technicians, 24-hour emergency service, we are locally owned and operated, and a trusted leader in the restoration industry.  If you are not sure if SERVPRO is the right pick, please check out these testimonials left by some of our customers!

A horrendous mess made into an incredible experience by an amazing team of professionals. When I first called SERVPRO, I was over my head and in tears with the mess I was left to clean up by myself. Paige and Angela listened carefully and patiently to my plight and were efficient with providing an estimate that worked with my finances. They were ready to clean faster than I was, and when it came time to do the dirty work, their awesome team, Cindy, Sabrina, and Matt, were friendly, polite, compassionate and efficient beyond measure. They turned "the rat room" into a cellar, and made a level of clean that I have never seen in that space before. I will forever recommend SERVPRO and their teams of professionals for any restoration or deep cleaning work. Would I personally hire them again? Undoubtedly, absolutely, 110%

(Review on Google)

The team at SERVPRO is by far the best. I work with a lot of different companies and I’ve never worked with such an honest, kind, fair and hard-working team. I will ALWAYS recommend them to all my customers, friends and family.

(Review on Google)

Wow! My wife called while I was at work and said the basement flooded. Water had gotten underneath LVP and a Bar area. The team was on scene in less than an hour and although we had the visible water cleaned up they pulled minimal moldings and placed equipment to dry everything out. 24 hours later everything was dry! Will definitely recommend them to anyone that could use their services! A +.

Proprietary Cleaning Agents And Your Home!

Flooded Basement

Our Technicians Use a Variety of Proprietary Cleaning Agents to Restore North Idaho Homes

11/10/2020

No matter where you live, it can flood. Severe weather, torrential rainfall and melting snow can cause flooding. When floodwaters rage, they invade homes, leaving disaster in its path. Water extraction and cleanup are a primary concern.

How are Homes Affected by Floodwater?
During natural disasters, 90% of the damage is caused by flooding. Floodwater is Category III, meaning it is highly contaminated. Sewage, bacteria, debris, and medical waste can all be found in the water pouring into your home due to flooding. Standing water is not only a biohazard, but the moisture alone can damage structural elements and the contents of the residence. Flooded homes needs professional mitigation.

Decontaminating the Premises
Water extraction and sanitation are dealt with before structural drying begins. Preventing the spread of microbes is an immediate concern. Our EPA-registered proprietary cleaning agents remove contaminants and help with foul odors. We employ the following:
    •    Antimicrobials – These products inhibit microbe growth and development, preventing them from spreading.
    •    Biocides –Chemical agents that mitigate living organisms. Viricides and fungicides are in this group and deal with microbial sanitary concerns.
    •    Disinfectant – Common disinfectants include quaternaries, alcohol, chlorines, and phenols. This class of antimicrobials kills up to 99% of germs.
    •    Sanitizers – Cleaning agents that reduce microbial levels to safe levels.
    •    Sporicides – remediate bacterial growth and fungus. Used for mold.

Contaminated surfaces get treated with the appropriate cleaning agent. As cleanup and restoration move forward, items are re-treated as needed. Our technicians are experts in flood damage control. Our goal is to return your home to preloss condition, if possible.

Handling Fires & SERVPRO

6/16/2020

Here at SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene, we have a long list of jobs we specialize in going beyond the fire, soot, and mold. Cleaning up fire damage is one of our specialties. So naturally, when a local high school suffered a grease fire in their kitchen we were more than happy to help clean up the damage that occurred.  It is our job here at SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene to make accidents look "Like it never even happened." The extent of the fire was pretty bad as soot covered most of the walls. Our team used our special SERVPRO cleaning products to help restore the kitchen to a much cleaner state. The owners of the property were very pleased with the rate of our work as well as the final product.

Does Your Business Have a SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan?

SERVPRO "ERP"

6/16/2020

Your Coeur d'Alene restaurant or gift shop caters to both residents and visitors to our beautiful community in Northern Idaho. The last thing you need is the disruption and chaos of a water loss, but it does happen. To avoid disappointing customers and losing their business for a time or permanently consider working with our experienced project managers on a proactive approach to any possible water event.

Commercial water damage in North Idaho can have many causes. Plumbing springs leaks and appliances malfunction, both instances capable of closing your doors for the short term. Unfortunately, statistics show that a business that needs to shut down and regroup after a water disaster can see the short term need turn into a permanent closure. We have options to prevent the double tragedy of water damage and business loss.

Developing a personalized SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan and Profile (ERP) is a proactive step you take in collaboration with our team to minimize the effect of a water loss and get your back to business in record time. One of our managers visits your site, becoming familiar with your layout and operations. An evaluation of your commercial property’s strengths and vulnerabilities permits us to make recommendations that could save you from severe damage to the building’s structure, equipment, and contents if a water event occurs.

You use the SERVPRO mobile app to add details and set out priorities. Identify key vendors and contractors for us to contact if we have questions during remediation. Share information about the location of utility shut-offs and critical documents. Designate trusted employees or others who can act in your stead if you are out of town or otherwise unavailable during the emergency.

Taken together the two parts of the SERVPRO ERP provide a concise, digital blueprint for our team to follow in the event of a water crisis at your business. The documents make it clear you choose us to meet your restoration needs, and the confidence you and your customers feel knowing our industry-leading team is on your side smooths the process.

Contact us at (208)457-1234 to schedule a walk-through to start the ERP process. SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene is eager to partner with you and your workforce to prepare for the worst by working with the best.
