Frozen Pipes-

Extreme cold weather can cause pipes to freeze and burst. In general, pipes are more likely to freeze when the temperature is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The resulting water damage can be extensive. Outdoor pipes and pipes in unheated areas of the home can freeze if they are not properly insulated or if temperatures are severely cold. SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene can quickly and safely repair water damage caused by frozen pipes.

Outdoor pipes most likely to freeze include:

  • Outdoor hose bibs
  • Swimming pool supply lines
  • Water sprinkler lines

Pipes in unheated or partially heated areas are also at risk of freezing, including:

  • Basements
  • Crawl spaces
  • Garages

Ice Dams

An ice dam is formed when snow melts unevenly on a roof and refreezes into a dam at the edge of the roof, near the eaves. This dam prevents any further snowmelt from draining off of the roof. This standing water can back up under shingles, leak into a home, and cause significant water damage to ceilings, walls, and other areas. Ice dams can also tear off gutters and loosen shingles.

Roof Damage

Snow and ice can cause significant damage to your gutters and roof. The additional weight of snow and ice can even cause a roof to collapse. When there’s a cold snap, water can get into cracks and small spaces and expand when it freezes, causing larger cracks and more damage. The repetition of freezing and thawing cycles can cause small cracks to get larger.

If you encounter any of these situations, please call us directly at 208-457-1234!

Blue House with Ice Dam and icicles hanging off the roof Don't let this winter's snow storms build up future water damage!

Winter Water Damage

SERVPRO of Coeur d’Alene offers tips this season to help keep your home clear of Ice Dam Damage after a winter storm!

These easy tips can help prevent these pesky Dams from forming over the cold and wet season.

#1 Add insulation in your attic.

#2 Remove attic heat sources.

#3 Insulate attic access doors.

#4 Check the exhausts.

#5 Check flashing around the chimney.

Ice Dams can damage your property. These damages occur when the following happens:

  • Heat collects in the attic and warms the roof, except at the eaves.
  • Snow melts in the warm roof and then freezes on the cold eaves.
  • Ice accumulates along the eaves, forming a dam. Melting water from the warm roof backs up behind it, flows under the shingles, and into the house.

If your home or business is affected by an Ice Dam this winter, call SERVPRO of Coeur d’Alene directly at 208-457-1234! We are available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Enjoy the Christmas season without having to worry about the after effects of water damage intruding into your home!

Do You Have Fallen Trees?

12/1/2021 (Permalink)

Neighbors tree fell over on a homeowner's roof Neighbors tree fell over on a homeowner's roof

Severe weather events that can threaten North Idaho homes do not always damage your home in ways that you might expect. With harsh winds, snow, ice and torrential rainfall, aging or dying trees can uproot or split, allowing it to fall into your house. The roof of your property was not made to sustain blunt impact and can give way and collapse in these strike zones.

SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene has a comprehensive approach to restoration and recovery, supplying both accredited technicians for water or cleaning restoration inside the house and great contacts of licensed general contractors we partner with. This full team of professionals focuses on addressing three primary areas of focus when contending with tree damage.

Roof Tarping

Emergency construction solutions are a vital element to restoration and recovery in its earliest phases. To reduce or entirely prevent flooding or water exposure, our roof tarping services encompass the entire damaged portion of the roof.

Mitigation

If water damage exists inside of the house, these situations must get addressed immediately to reduce the threat of secondary effects such as mold growth. Even without moisture or flooding concerns, our cleaning technicians can work on debris removal and damage assessment inside to prepare the home for the full-scale reconstruction to follow.

Many unfortunate storm damage scenarios can compromise the roof of your family home. Even though this situation can be stressful and challenging, you can trust in the comprehensive approach of our SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene team to help. You can reach us 24/7 by calling us at 208-457-1234.

Winter Storms and Ice Dams

5 Ice Dam prevention tips 5 Ice Dam prevention tips

The potential for surprise snow storms are very real and happen often in the winter months of North Idaho (and it's surrounding areas). They can also be beautiful to see as the snow sticks to trees, bushes and buildings! But, as we know, they can be dangerous to your home and business as well. In order to stay safe, SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene wants you to please follow these and other safety tips for your home.

Before the Storm:

* Have an emergency supply kit on hand.

* Develop a communication plan with all members of your family.

* Have a generator on hand in case you lose power.

* Be sure to have extra sources of light and heat (flashlights, candles, stockpiled wood for fires, blakets, etc).

After the Storm:

* If wires come down due to the weight of the snow, do not touch them.

* Do not drive on roads that haven't been cleared.

* If you lose power, turn on water taps to drip so your pipes won't freeze.

Keep you and your family safe during a storm! When in doubt, stay away from anything that may look suspicious or anything that may break due to the weight of the snow.

If the snow starts melting and it comes into your home, SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene is here to help! We can remove any affected materials and dry out the structure.

Storm Damage

Take Care of Your Roof

* Keep your gutters clear of debris! This will keep ice for accumulating and backing up and will prevent further damage to your shingles.

*Trim your trees all year-round to prevent broken branches.

Highlights:

  • Roof care is essential to prevent further damages to your home!
  • Keep an eye on any ice dams that may form
  • Watch for water intrusion in your walls and ceilings.
  • Keep walkways and driveways clear.

How to Prevent Ice Dams:

  • Eliminate heat sources which may be under your roof (examples are: lights and heaters in attic spaces).
  • Keep your attic cool and well ventilated.
  • Contact a roofing professional to remove snow or fix broken shingles.
  • Invest in a roof rake if possible. This is a tool that allows you to stand on the ground and safely brush snow off of your roof.
  • Avoid trying to chip away at any ice dams that have formed. This could damage your roof and gutter.
  • Talk with your roofing professional about sealing the roof deck with a moisture barrier.

SERVPRO has the Equipment and Manpower for Complete Flood Damage Restoration

11/10/2020

Floodwaters can inundate a home in minutes, bringing water, debris, and toxic chemicals/materials into your home. Many homeowners do not have flood insurance due to the expense, or insurance coverage is not offered. When a flood occurs, many try to do the cleanup themselves to save money. However, there can be severe impacts taking this approach.

SERVPRO has witnessed the results and the damage caused by floods. We bring a team of experts and high capacity equipment to extract the water, remove damaged materials, and disinfect all affected areas. Unsalvageable materials are removed, and anything that can be salvaged is saved. Our equipment is set up in specific patterns to efficiently remove humidity and dry your home, including difficult to reach areas.

How Long Does it Take to Dry My Home?

The amount of flood damage can vary. The size and the scope of the loss, how long the water was in place, and the kind of building materials will determine how long it takes to dry your home. Shop-Vacs and room fans cannot correctly dry materials and structure before mold begins to set in.

SERVPRO utilizes high volume air movers and dehumidifiers to dry the affected area properly. A home or office can be dried within two or three days from the initial event. However, homeowners who initially tried to dry their homes before calling our team may find more water damage caused by the long exposure. Wood products absorb moisture and swell. Moisture can seep into concrete walls, which takes longer to dry. Mold colonies may have also begun to grow.

Don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene to help avoid additional water damage by allowing water to penetrate structures and building materials.

Storm Damage And Your Property

11/10/2020

Dealing with repairs and insurance companies after severe weather hits your property can be difficult. Homeowners can use the following tips to help tackle the storm damage caused by hard rains, flooding, or storm-related issues.

SAFETY FIRST

If you and your family were away from home when the storm hit, do not return until it has been confirmed safe. Contact a storm damage expert like SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene; we’ll help you determine what the next step should be.

INSURANCE

You will need to contact your homeowners’ insurance agent as soon as possible. If your neighborhood has sustained widespread damage, find out if any special teams of insurance agents, relief workers, or contractors are coming to the area. Check your policy to find out what actions you need to take or talk to your agent to make sure you are following the proper procedures. Not following these actions correctly could result in a reduced claim. Inspect your property and make a list of all damages; take photographs of all noted damage if at all possible.

RECORDING AND DOCUMENTING

Document your neighbor’s damages, as well; this can prevent the insurance provider from downgrading your claim by saying the damage is from your neglect of maintenance or other unrelated issues by giving them a way to compare. Keep a record of all the communication you have with your insurance provider, and don’t do any unnecessary repair work yourself. Hire a trusted storm damage restoration service provider such as SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene to handle any repairs.

BE SCAM FREE

Always check the adjuster’s identification. If you are evacuated, ask for money from your claim upfront. If they agree, you will be given a check for an amount that will be deducted from your final settlement. Some providers will automatically offer a partial payment early on during the process. Review it carefully and decline it if you feel uncomfortable with any part of it. Never be afraid to ask questions and to expect an answer that makes sense or seems fair.

Dealing with the aftermath of a storm is stressful, but reacting properly will be an immense help and can prevent problems down the road.

Your SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene team is ready to help 24/7. Call us for your fire or water damage issues at (208) 457-1234, or visit our website.

Shelter From The Storm

6/17/2019 (Permalink)

Storm Damage

6/16/2020

A heavy rainstorm has finally stopped. Or maybe a long winter has finally ended, and the deep snows have begun to melt.

While good weather may seem like a relief, the potential for water damage may just be beginning. Stormwater runoff can quickly overwhelm natural and man-made systems, leading to flooding and property damage.

The steps you take today to prepare your home and yard for proper drainage can help avoid time-consuming and costly repairs when the bad weather does blow through.

In a natural environment, stormwater runoff is absorbed by the soil, evaporates into the atmosphere or flows into bodies of water, such as streams, lakes or rivers. Homeowners may need to recreate the natural environment on their property to address stormwater runoff. This includes planting trees and other vegetation, building rain gardens and installing rain barrels or cisterns to collect roof water.

How Can You Protect Your Home from Storm Water?

“The key to developing a yard drainage plan is to understand the specific characteristics of your property and implement the system that works best for you,” says Mike Koppang, a Travelers Risk Control professional. During a storm, you can go outside and observe how the water flows. Take note of the different grades and slopes and whether they divert the flowing water away from your home. Look for any low spots that collect or pool water and for any steep slopes that have indications of surface erosion.

Consider the steps needed to protect your property from water runoff. The rain that falls on roofs, driveways, patios, roads and other impervious areas moves across the ground surface at greater speeds. The property adjacent to these areas could be more susceptible to damage. Frozen soil can also increase the risk of damage by preventing water from being absorbed by the soil. Replacing impervious areas with pervious surfaces, such as permeable paving stones or pavers, can also help.

Other questions you might consider:

Is stormwater that falls on impervious surfaces diverted away from your house? This is the work of things like roof gutter downspouts, driveways, walkways and patios. Runoff from these surfaces should be directed to an area that has the ability to absorb or slow the surface flow, such as landscaped areas, and away from your house.

Does your house have a stream, pond or lake close by? Consider the flood potential and how it may impact your property. You can research local flood maps that will detail flood water levels for various storm events and their flood potential.

Does your driveway or other impervious surface have a negative pitch back toward the house? Consider installing trench drains or area drains to help prevent pooling and divert water away from the house.

Do you have retaining walls on your property? If so, it is important that the walls have a drainage system in place to alleviate pressure behind the wall. Periodically clean weep holes to ensure they are not clogged. Surface water should not be allowed to cascade over the top of the wall and instead should be diverted to the end of the wall or around it.

Is a portion of your house below ground level, such as a basement? Make sure any sewer and water lines, or any other pipes or lines that penetrate subsurface walls, and foundation cracks are properly sealed. Basements that are prone to water intrusion should have a water collection system in place, such as a sump pump system. This system should be maintained with a battery backup for continued operation in the event of a power failure. Consider elevating mechanical systems or installing curbs around areas that need protecting but cannot be elevated, such as finished areas and storage areas. Exterior basement window wells should have covers and the ground surface of the well should be below the well rim.

Do you have a sewer or septic system and property with known high water tables? Have the system checked by a professional. If the groundwater rises too high, it can affect the efficiency and operation of the system. In some cases, this may lead to sewer back up or waste leaching above the ground or back into the house.

Surface stormwater is not the only consideration for protecting your home. It is also important to assess the functionality of your whole home envelope system. Make sure that your house exterior is maintained, including roofing, flashings, weather barriers, windows, doors, and sealants.

While you cannot prevent against all damage from stormwater runoff during large acts of nature, these steps can help protect your home when storms do hit.

NOAA Weather-Ready Ambassador

6/16/2020

The NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassadors program is an effort to formally recognize NOAA partners who are actively improving the nation's readiness and responsiveness to severe weather events. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) initiated the program to help build a country that is ready and responsive to Mother Nature’s worst.

NOAA ambassadors are located all over the country. Each one works closely with NOAA in helping inform the public of weather risks through various platforms, with social media being of the largest.

In December of 2018 SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene was selected as a Weather-Ready Ambassador. It is our commitment to helping keep our neighbors in the Northern Idaho area informed of weather activity as well as timely information on how to prepare for inclement weather. Watch for these messages on our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts.

This program works well with the principals SERVPRO has been built on. Like our partners across the country, SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene takes pride in educating those in our community on emergency preparedness. While we work with NOAA to keep people safe in the event of severe weather, we have over three decades of experience helping people deal with the aftermath of the same storms. Storm Damage Safety Tips:

***Clear those gutters

PLEASE NOTE: Cleaning gutters can be the reason why you WILL NOT have a water damage issue inside your home!

Do you have loose fence posts?

Remember that anything that is not nailed down is a potential liability. Checking your fence footings for security is a must!

Replace those shingles (as needed)

If a shingle is damaged, it’s more likely to break free. If it is missing you will have a gap for wind to get under and do even more damage. Note: Installing or replacing shingles must be nailed properly — NOT above the nail line.

Water must flow away from your home.

The grade of your lot should keep water flowing away from your home and into a ditch, drain, or some other proper retention area.

Do you have a sump pump? Is your sump pump in working order?

To be extra careful, having a backup sump pump is a sure-fire way to prevent basement flooding.

Loose Siding and Repair

It is important to ensure your siding isn’t damaged. Repairing any damage beforehand is essential to prevent damage from a loss.

Proper sealing

Wind only needs a small opening to get underneath something like a shingle or siding and rip it off.

Is your generator handy?

This could ensure you don’t lose your food, or the livability of your home until power is restored.

Property Walk

Identify items around your home that could become projectiles. Move those items to a garage, a shed, or indoors.

Trim those trees

This small tip is an excellent way to protect your roof and windows.

SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene wants you to follow good safety habits as storm weather is upon us. We care about what matters to you!
