Mitigating Sewage Damage

Sewage damage to your home needs to be handled correctly.  Sewage contains viruses, microbes, parasites, and bacteria.  There are three (3) main health concerns that a person would have to consider after being exposed to raw sewage.

The primary health concerns would be gastrointestinal problems that result in vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms.  The second concern would be hepatitis.  The third concern would be infections in areas where the person had open cuts, abrasions, and rashes.

There are three (3) types of contaminated water that may be found in your home.  The first is "clean water" or Category 1 contaminated water introduced into your home.  Depending upon the temperature, mixing with contaminants in the carpet and/or surrounding areas, and time.  If not mitigated promptly Category 1 contaminated water may change to either Category 2 and/or 3.

Category 2 contaminated water is essentially water that has infiltrated into the home from the Tank or Bowl of a toilet (without feces and minimal urine).  Category 1 contaminated water can quickly move into Category 2 contaminated water if not promptly mitigated.

Category 3 contaminated water is water that contains grossly contaminated water that contains feces, urine, harsh chemicals, and other contaminants.  SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene recommends that the homeowner not get involved in either Category 2 and/or Category 3 contaminated water.  The health risks are too serious to clean-up without training and experience.
