Protein/ Kitchen Fires

1/3/2020

Information that has been recorded and received from the US Fire Administration says: cooking has caused 50% of all of home fires (2014 edition). These fires are called "Protein Fires" which happen as a result of burnt meats, eggs or any other food that contains protein. These fires do not necessarily cause dark smoke or large flames. It is not sufficient enough just to wipe down the area (even though it may look like that is all that needs to be done). The smell of any protein fire can leave quite an unpleasant odor which you will want to have taken care of immediately! The smell will affect your furniture and walls more than just a regular fire would. "Protein Fires" quickly absorb into any surrounding upholstery, cabinets, ceiling and walls. Additionally, "Protein Fires" leave behind layers of cooking grease. Removing this can be nearly impossible and trying to eliminate the odor can be very time consuming and frustrating.

 Here are some tips on removing cooking grease:

*Cover kitchen floor with plastic or old rags- preventing more damage from occurring.

* Mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar and squirt dish washing soap for every quart of warm water into a bucket.

*Use a submerged sponge mop with cleaning solution and ring out any excess.

*Use submerged sponge to gently (but effectively) scrub kitchen counter tops, cabinets, ceilings and walls (with using back and forth motion). Repeat 3 times as needed. Use a soft bristled brush for extra scrubbing on tougher grease areas. This not only helps to remove grease spots, but also the awful, lingering smell of a protein fire.

*Once scrubbing is done, rinse sponge, pour any remaining solution out and clean mop and/or rags.

* Softly wipe (to remove) remaining residue from the cleaning solution using only fresh water and a clean sponge and/or rag.

* Take off cover from flooring and scrub.

* Dry all surfaces.

If staining remains, you may use a fresh coat of paint to cover area. If odors still remain, call your SERVPRO of Coeur d'Alene professionals. We have the right cleaning power and equipment to handle your "Protein Fire" needs.
