1) Work out a family escape plan ahead of time. 

2) Follow specific instructions when using space heaters. Don't crowd in a small area. Turn off when not home. 

3) Crawl under the smoke. Go as low as possible. 

4) Pot handles in the kitchen should always face away from you. Enforce a kid free zone in the kitchen when cooking near a stove/oven if possible. 

5) Install Smoke Alarms in the home and/or make sure that they are all in working condition.
